ESA-FMI Arctic-Boreal Earth Science, calibration and validation supersite

European Space Agency and FMI have established an Arctic-Boreal Supersite on the premises of FMI Arctic Space Centre. The project started in September 2025. The Supersite focuses on three scientific themes:

  1. Arctic-Boreal forest ecosystem
  2. Hydrology and seasonal snow
  3. Greenhouse gases and atmospheric composition

During the project, we will determine the development needs of the Sodankylä Supersite and invest in instruments, campaigns and infrastructure to support current and future satellite missions. In addition, we will develop a framework for instrument and method testing in Sodankylä to support R&D for satellite missions and Arctic-Boreal environmental research.

In our long-term vision, the Sodankylä Supersite

  • is the leading measurement and research station of the Arctic-Boreal environment and its changes
  • is central in the calibration and validation of current and future ESA missions
  • is a well-known R&D testbed for Finnish industry and environmental research

FMI collaborates with Finnish industry to develop the Supersite. Project partners are:
